Professor Kasi Lemmons’ film Harriet just had its theatrical release. The film held its premiere in Los Angeles, and has surpassed box office forecasts for opening weekend, debuting to $12 million.

Harriet tells the heroic story of abolitionist Harriet Tubman after she risks her newfound freedom to liberate hundreds of slaves through the Underground Railroad. Lemmons told Indie Wire, “I wanted to really be able to represent Harriet as as accurately as I could, while still making an entertaining movie that would reach a broad audience.” The film has received an incredibly positive response, earning an audience score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
